Crew Movie Review: Kingfisher Airlines claiming bankruptcy is no secret, leaving their employees without salaries for months. How the owner Vijay Mallya fled the UK to evade media scrutiny and escape paying back various institutions stayed in the headlines for months. The film Crew starring Kareena Kapoor Khan, Tabu and Kriti Sanon, intends to address the same incident but with their version of true JUSTICE. The story follows three diligent friends who work as cabin crew for Kohinoor Airlines, owned by Vijay Walia and NOT Mallya. Their peaceful existence is shattered when they become ensnared in a complex predicament orchestrated by an individual with ulterior motives. They find themselves trapped in an ongoing struggle, desperately seeking freedom from monetary challenges as the airlines goes bankrupt.
Crew Movie Plot
Glamourous colleagues Geeta Sethi (Tabu), Jasmine Kohli (Kareena Kapoor Khan), and Divya Rana (Kriti Sanon) serving exceptional hospitality to the passengers of Kohinoor Airlines -- Veg/Non-Veg! Geeta lives with her affectionate husband Arun (portrayed by Kapil Sharma), who operates a cloud kitchen after being alienated from his family. Jasmine resides with her maternal grandfather and dreams of establishing her own beauty company. Divya, once a top academic performer, harboured aspirations of becoming a pilot. However, due to circumstances, she ends up working as an air hostess. To shield her parents from disappointment, she falsely portrays herself as a pilot. But, the airline company they are employed with is grappling with severe financial challenges, resulting in the trio and their colleagues not receiving their salaries for the past six months
For the most part, the film delves into the mundane routines of the cabin crew and their monotonous days. However, everything takes a turn when Kareena, Tabu, and Kriti stumble upon a revelation that promises to alter their lives for the better—or so they believe. When they chance upon slabs of gold belonging to their deceased boss while on the airplane, they are enticed to consider stealing them. While Kriti and Tabu maintain their goodness, Kareena's sharp-witted and bold persona is unapologetically willing to compromise her morals and then 'Sona Kitna Sona Hai' turns their life 360 degrees!
They discover plans to smuggle gold to Al-Burj for financial gain. After considerable deliberation, they opt to collaborate with their HR Head Mittal in hopes of breaking free from their financially modest lifestyles. However, sub-inspector Mala barges in!
Crew: What Worked
Caught amidst the conflicts between necessities, desires, and ethical considerations, 'Crew' offers a thought-provoking perspective on the upper-middle class and their dynamic with wealth, morality, and 'Adarsh, jisse bill nahi bharte'. Kareena, Tabu and Kriti Sanon, the trio in their different age group, manage to slay and shine throughout the movie. Their too-hot-to-handle camaraderie appears natural, and one can't help but be hooked to watch these badass women perform little action in a high-octane heist film.
Supported by a trio of outstanding performances, each of them possesses a backstory that enables to empathise with their characters yet not agree with their crime. Their self-induces justice of a big crime seems superficial but cathartic when they take their revenge. The groovy songs and background score work for the situations and scenes, kudos to Vishal Mishra, Diljit Dosanjh and John Stewart Eduri.
Additionally, Kapil Sharma played the role of a dotting husband to Tabu and their chemistry appeared natural. Like always, one cannot keep their eyes off the screen when Diljit Dosanjh appears.
Crew: What Doesn't Work
The film does not fall short on hotness and glamour quotient but comedy. Crew portrays women as ambitious and unapologetic individuals while celebrating sisterhood and female friendships. The protagonists seem flawed and predictable. Despite the entertaining presence of Diljit Dosanjh and Kapil Sharma, the story remains focused on the female characters. Kulbhushan Kharbanda's special appearance is cute though.
Under the direction of Rajesh A Krishnan, the first half of 'Crew' may leave some viewers wanting more, as it mainly revolves around the detention of the main trio by customs officers over their suspected ties to a gold smuggling case. It appears sluggish, slowly setting the stage for the other half. However, the second part sees a significant improvement in both narrative, story depth and pace.
Crew: Final Verdict
You can't miss Kareena's portrayal of Jasmine, which is a sight to behold. She exudes charm, ambition, and fearlessness, effortlessly capturing the hearts. And obliviously the background music of 'Sona Kitna sona hai,' makes the film a good watch. It celebrates female friendship, where Kareena, Tabu and Kriti fiercely love, protect, and complement each other.
