Mindy Kaling caused a stir on the Met Gala 2024 red carpet, sparking speculation among netizens. Her attire drew comparisons to actress Aishwarya Rai Bachchan's Cannes 2022 ensemble. Mindy made a bold statement as she graced the 2024 Met Gala in a voluminous, nude-colored strapless gown designed by Gaurav Gupta. It featured sculptural elements arching over her head and intricate loop and swirl patterns throughout. Despite its grand size, the gown exuded an ethereal charm with its airy, sheer layers and elegantly draped sweetheart neckline bodice, witn touch of sparkles.

Following the viral spread of Mindy Kaling's photos and videos from the Met Gala 2024, numerous users took to social media to discuss the resemblance of her outfit to Aishwarya's Cannes ensemble from 2022. She also wore a Gaurav Gupta gown, featuring a long sculptural piece over her head and a veil, reminiscent of Kaling's attire. A user wrote, "guts toh hai, but you could see she couldn’t stop smiling cuz of the dress."

In order to let her show-stopping dress shine, Kaling chose subtle glam, except for a smokey eye, and styled her short bob with soft curls at the ends. Mindy, aged 44, attended her inaugural Met Gala in 2013. During an episode of Meghan Markle’s Archetypes podcast, Kaling confessed feeling "fraudulent" during her first Met Gala attendance. "I did feel like fraudulent the first year I went. I didn't know you were supposed to stay uptown near the Met. You're supposed to get in a standing van so your dress didn't wrinkle. I was just in a cab, in my dress, sitting in the backseat of a car, you know, driving for 45 minutes," Mindy said.
