Diljit Dosanjh is all set to star in the Netflix movie 'Chamkila', which is a biopic based on the life of the popular Punjabi singer Amar Singh Chamkila. Directed by Imtiaz Ali, the movie stars Parineeti Chopra as Amar Singh Chamkila's wife and singing partner, Amarjot. Diljit recently talked about his experience of working in 'Chamkila' and praised Imtiaz Ali's dedication towards the movie. He revealed that the filmmaker knew about Amar Singh Chamkila more than him.
While speaking to Film Companion, Diljit said, "Every day Imtiaz sir sends a mail detailing bits and pieces about Chamkila’s personality like how he would walk and all. I have never had a schooling like this. He is earnest and very focused. I thought I knew Chamkila because I am from Punjab, and I have heard his music, but personally, I think Imtiaz knows him more. He is a big director, and I wanted to work with him.”
He added, "I was not nervous. He is very serious, but I am not. If I get serious, then the work will get ruined.”

For the unversed, Amar Singh Chamkila was also known as the 'Elvis Of Punjab' and is often regarded as one of the best live stage performers in Punjab. He rose to fame with his song 'Takue Te Takua' and had developed an interest in music, and singing since childhood and had mastered the dhol and harmonium.
After separating from his first wife, Amar Singh Chamkila married Amarjot Kaur, with whom he had a son, Jaiman Chamkila. Amarjot Kaur was Chamkila's singing partner as well and had left her first marriage to follow the dream of becoming a singer. On March 8, 1988, the couple was gunned down in Mehsampur, Punjab and shot dead by a group of unidentified group of young boys.
Talking about working with Parineeti Chopra and Diljit Dosanjh, director Imtiaz Ali earlier said in a statement, "Making Amar Singh Chamkila on the life of the iconic music star of the masses has been a unique journey for me. I could not have asked for better actors than the immensely talented Diljit Dosanjh and Parineeti Chopra to play in this film, especially since it involves some live singing. The film follows the crazed popularity of Chamkila’s daring songs that society could neither ignore nor swallow. Having Netflix as a partner, I am humbled to take our story to millions of viewers not only in India but around the globe.”
'Amar Singh Chamkila' will release on Netflix on April 12, 2024.
