Based on the Indian Emergency, it stars Ranaut as former Prime Minister of India, Indira Gandhi. Amid positive response from critics, here is a quite OTT update about the movie.

Emergency OTT Update

The OTT rights of Emergency have been sold to Netflix. The OTT release date is yet to be announced.

About the movie: Emergency is a historical biographical drama that delves into the life of former Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. The film is based on the Indian Emergency, a pivotal event in Indian history and stars Ranaut as Gandhi. Principal photography for the film began in July 2022 and wrapped up in January 2023. Initially scheduled for release on September 6, 2024, the film faced delays due to certification issues with the Central Board of Film Certification. However, after clearing the necessary hurdles, Emergency finally hit theaters on January 17, 2025.

Despite its ambitious premise, Emergency received mixed-to-negative reviews from film critics, with many panning its uneven storytelling and historical inaccuracies. The film's portrayal of Indira Gandhi has been particularly criticised, with some arguing that it reduces her to a caricature.

The film's music and compositions, however, have been praised for their lyrical quality. Despite its flaws, Emergency remains a notable film due to its attempts to tackle complex historical events and its impressive cast, which includes Anupam Kher, Shreyas Talpade, and Mahima Chaudhry.

At the box office, Emergency failed to make a significant impact. Despite this, Emergency remains a notable film in Kangana Ranaut's directorial career, showcasing her ambition and willingness to tackle complex subjects. The film's failure, however, highlights the challenges of adapting historical events into compelling cinema.
