Fighter: The much-anticipated Bollywood film featuring Hrithik Roshan as an Indian Air Force officer, is set to hit theatres on January 25. However, since the release of the first look a few weeks ago, comparisons with the Hollywood blockbuster franchise, Top Gun, starring Tom Cruise, have been inevitable. In response to the audience's reactions, director Siddharth Anand addressed the comparisons and urged viewers to treat Indian films with more respect.
In an interview with Zoom, Siddharth Anand acknowledged the comparisons, stating, "I think it is inevitable. As a filmmaker, you have to be prepared that if you make a film on planes, they will call it Top Gun because they have no reference point, so they believe that we are not so creative, that we will do things that are a rip-off. We need to start looking at our films with a little bit more respect and not constantly believe that things are being ripped off."
Highlighting the creative process, Anand emphasized that inspiration is universal, and even in the West, creators draw from content originating in the East. He shared his own experiences, saying, "I have many instances where... lately also where I did some sequences, and those sequences were similar to a film that came out later, a very, very big franchise film in the West. I am not saying they copied us. There's no way they would copy us, so let's be real. There are only that many things you can do in action, and there will be overlaps. You just got to do it with an X factor that makes it different."

Addressing the Top Gun comparisons directly, Anand reassured audiences that any similarities would be dispelled within the first five minutes of Fighter. He stressed the importance of presenting action sequences with a unique perspective to distinguish them from other films.
Fighter is not just another action film; it is intended as a tribute to the sacrifice and patriotism of the Indian armed forces. The storyline revolves around the Air Dragons, a new elite unit commissioned by the Air Headquarters in response to militant activities in the Srinagar Valley.
As the film gears up for its release, Siddharth Anand invites viewers to appreciate the distinctiveness of Indian cinema and encourages a more respectful perspective towards the creative efforts put into crafting original narratives. Fighter promises to deliver an action-packed experience that goes beyond comparisons, offering a heartfelt tribute to the bravery and dedication of the Indian armed forces.
