A middle-class couple who were both doctors in the Indian Army gave birth to a baby girl in Tata Main Hospital in Jamshedpur in 1982. It is unknown whether the parents, Madhu and Ashok Chopra, had a janampatri made for their daughter. It is unlikely they would have believed that their daughter, Priyanka, would achieve so much in her life. She went to the US to study, became Miss India before turning 18, followed by winning the Miss World pageant. She then became a model and Bollywood star, rising to the top of the industry. Next, she left her safety net to pursue a new career in the US as a pop singer and later a lead actor on a prime-time television show!
Priyanka's Global Breakthroughs:
Some people are destined to travel and explore the globe while others are destined to achieve greatness. Priyanka Chopra is a woman who has successfully navigated her way through her worldwide pursuits.
Today, she has established herself as a global brand. Regardless of whether she's dancing with children in Africa or causing a stir online with her shocking revelations about politics in Bollywood, everything that PeeCee does, contributes to her status as a renowned international celebrity.
Although Priyanka's rise to prominence in Hollywood may be considered fairly recent, as she prepares for the release of her upcoming projects - the highly anticipated romantic comedy Love Again co-starring Céline Dion, and the thrilling Prime Video series Citadel, alongside Richard Madden and directed by the Russo brothers - we take a look at her journey to global dominancy.
The Rise And Rise of Priyanka Chopra:
Priyanka gained widespread attention after winning the Miss World pageant in 2000. Throughout her film career, she starred in several box office hits and failures, leading her to pursue fewer but more intriguing roles. Chopra constantly reinvented herself and eventually made a big impact in Hollywood when she was offered a part in the American drama series Quantico by ABC Studios in 2015, which helped her gain global recognition.
Expanding Her Hollywood Presence:
Although the show got cancelled after three seasons, she remains popular in Hollywood today. After Quantico, Chopra secured roles in other movie projects. She appeared as the antagonist in Baywatch alongside Dwayne Johnson (The Rock) and Zac Efron, starred in A Kid Like Jake with Jim Parsons and Claire Danes, and had a supporting role in Isn't It Romantic starring Rebel Wilson.
Priyanka also joined a group of acclaimed actors such as Keanu Reeves, Kate Winslet, Nicole Kidman, and Idris Elba, among others, as a narrator in the ten-part series A World of Calm on HBO Max. The series consists of 30-minute unscripted episodes designed to help viewers relax and reduce stress through soothing imagery and narrations provided by the celebrity narrators.
Co-Producing Movies:
Did you know that Priyanka co-produced the horror movie Evil Eye alongside Jason Blum, the producer behind successful films such as Paranormal Activity, Insidious, and The Purge? The film is a seamless blend of Indian and Western cinema, exploring themes of reincarnation and superstition within Indian culture.
Venturing Into The World Of Business:
Priyanka Chopra entered the business world by launching her own haircare brand called Anomaly and opening an Indian restaurant named Sona. According to the actor, there are many cruelty-free, vegan, and sustainable skincare brands, but the haircare industry lacks in this aspect. Recognising this gap in the market, she established Anomaly.
Located in the buzzing city of New York, Priyanka Chopra and Chef Hari Nayak launched Sona, which serves food that reflects the actor's passion for Indian cuisine and the flavours she enjoyed while growing up in India.
Writing Her Own Book:
Priyanka released her memoir, Unfinished, in 2021. The book chronicles her childhood, as well as the obstacles she faced while navigating her career in India and Hollywood, among other things.
Announcing Oscar Nominations:
Priyanka Chopra became the first Indian woman to announce nominations for the Oscars in 2021 and was joined by her husband Nick Jonas. And let's not forget her very first BAFTA nomination for her critically-acclaimed movie The White Tiger.
The Secret To Priyanka's Success:
In 2019, Priyanka had told Tina Brown at the 10th annual Women in the World conference in New York City, that the secret to her success is recognising opportunity, taking hold of it and fostering it.
"I'm not a planner, honestly. I really am not. All I know is opportunity strikes when you don't expect it. The smarter thing to do is to recognise opportunity. That's what I have done all my life," she said.
"I've met amazing people and … dreams have come true out of those conversations. I also believe that ideas are the currency of the present. Allow your brain to have ideas. Think about how you can make those ideas real," she added.
Priyanka is therefore not just a stereotypical Indian face that Hollywood is using temporarily for diversity purposes, but rather a genuine and accomplished icon who has gained recognition globally and is highly coveted by major film studios.
She ventured onto an unexplored path with no assurance of success and is now effectively changing the worldwide perception of "brown girls," a term she often uses to describe herself. She proudly showcases her Indianness and never fails to reinforce her feminist beliefs and her commitment to making a positive social impact as a humanist.
Priyanka Chopra truly sets an example for all women with her diligence, persistence in staying engaged, and her unwavering determination to learn and grow.
