Tamil Cinema is well known for its beautiful and unique way of telling a story which is widely praised by the audience across India. But do you know many Tamil filmmakers got their story idea from some popular novels?
From 'Ponniyin Selvan' to 'Soorarai Pottutu', take a look at the Tamil movies which are based on or inspired by popular novels.
1. Ponniyin Selvan
Both parts of 'Ponniyin Selvan' are based on Kalki Krishnamurthy's 1955 novel of the same name. Directed by Mani Ratnam, the movie stars Vikram, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Jayam Ravi, Karthi, Trisha, Aishwarya Lekshmi and Sobhita Dhulipala. Both 'Ponniyin Selvan 1 and 2' were commercially and critically successful.
2. Aalavandhan
'Aalavandhan' is an adaptation of the novel 'Dhayam' written by Kamal Haasan in 1984. Kamal Haasan also starred in the film along with Raveena Tandon, Manisha Koirala, Sarath Babu, Gollapudi Maruti Rao, Madurai G.S. Mani and Milind Gunaji. Despite having a talented ensemble star cast, the movie failed commercially but won the National Film Award for Best Special Effects.
3. Soorarai Pottru
'Soorarai Pottru' is inspired by events from the life of G. R. Gopinath, founder of Indian low-cost airline Simplifly Deccan, which are described in his memoir 'Simply Fly: A Deccan Odyssey' The movie stars Suriya, Aparna Balamurali and Paresh Rawal and won five National Film Awards. Akshay Kumar and Radhika Madan will star in the Hindi remake of 'Soorarai Potturu'.
4. Asuran
'Asuran' is based on the novel 'Vekkai' by Poomani and stars Dhanush, Manju Warrier, Ken Karunas, and Teejay Arunasalam. The movie was a huge success and won two awards at the 67th National Film Awards: Best Feature Film in Tamil and Best Actor (Dhanush).
5. Viduthalai Part 1
'Viduthalai Part 1' is an adaptation of the short story 'Thunaivan' written by B. Jeyamohan. The movie stars Soori and Vijay Sethupathi in the lead role and is streaming on Zee5. The second instalment of the film is expected to release in December 2023.
