Karan Johar’s 2006 film Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna received mixed reactions upon its release but later evolved into a cult classic for its bold and unconventional storytelling. The musical romantic drama explored themes of marital infidelity, emotional emptiness and strained relationships, making it far ahead of its time. The film revolved around the extramarital affair between Shah Rukh Khan and Rani Mukerji’s characters, who find solace in each other after years of unhappy marriages with their onscreen partners, played by Preity Zinta and Abhishek Bachchan.
Now, in a recent interview, Karan opened up about how the intense emotional conflicts portrayed in the film also impacted the actors off-screen. KJo said that Preity Zinta had a difficulty to understand why Shah Rukh Khan’s character cheated in Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna.
"She was getting very personal… I had taken her aside, and we went for a walk. I said, ‘It’s not Preity Zinta. This is Rhea. It’s happening to her’. I remember, at one point, Abhishek broke down… remember there was an emotional scene? I remember he broke down. There were moments when I could just see you (Rani) looking sullen and sad. I realised that everyone was going through beats in their heads because the film talks about ground realities and emotional realities… things that people go through but don’t like to address… It was a very tumultuous experience," said Karan Johar.
Also featuring Amitabh Bachchan and Kirron Kher in pivotal roles, Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna marked an important milestone in Karan Johar’s filmmaking journey. The 2006 romantic drama was his third directorial venture, following the massive successes of Kuch Kuch Hota Hai (1998) and Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham (2001), films that firmly established him as one of Bollywood’s leading mainstream directors. With Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna, Karan took a significant creative risk by stepping away from traditional romantic narratives and exploring more complex, emotionally layered relationships.
The film also marked Karan Johar’s third collaboration with Shah Rukh Khan and Rani Mukerji, a pairing that had already delivered iconic performances in his earlier films. Their reunion added to the film’s anticipation and later became one of its most discussed aspects.
