The phrase "I Purple You" has become an integral part of the BTS fandom, serving as a heartfelt expression of affection and love from fans to the Kpop group. This endearing phrase is deeply rooted in the band's unique color, purple, which has become synonymous with BTS. However, what's fascinating is that the association between BTS and the color purple was entirely unintentional, and its origins date back to a pivotal moment in the group's history.

I Purple You: The Backstory

It all began during BTS' third muster, an annual fan meeting held in November 2016. During this event, Kim Taehyung, affectionately known as V, spontaneously coined the phrase "I purple you." This moment marked the beginning of a profound connection between the colour purple and the BTS fandom. Today, the phrase and the color have become an integral part of the BTS identity, transcending language and cultural barriers to spread love and positivity worldwide.

'I Purple You': Meaning

When explaining why he chose the color purple to express his love and devotion, V initially offered a poignant interpretation, stating that purple, being the last color of the rainbow, symbolised his commitment to trust and love his fans for a long time. However, in a candid admission, V later revealed that he had fabricated this explanation on the spot. Despite the humble beginnings of the phrase, V's sincerity shone through as he expressed his heartfelt wishes to his fans.

BTS’ V said, “Do you know what purple means? Purple is the last color of all the rainbow colors, so it means I will trust and love you for a long time. I just made it up. I wish I could see you for a long time, just like the meaning of purple. We'll always trust you and go up the stairs with you. You don't need to help us all the time. You can hold our hands and follow us now.”

The phrase "I Purple You" unexpectedly led to the color purple becoming synonymous with BTS and their fandom, ARMY. The color now accompanies BTS everywhere, adorning their campaigns and events. ARMY declared purple the group's official color, and "I Purple You" became a heartfelt way to express love and gratitude, often used by BTS members to thank fans for their unwavering support.
