The news of Tamannaah Bhatia being sued by Maharashtra Cyber Cell came to light after news agency ANI shared on X, “Maharashtra Cyber summons actor Tamannaah Bhatia for questioning in connection with the illegal streaming of IPL 2023 on Fairplay App that caused loss of Crores of Rupees to Viacom. She has been asked to appear before Maharashtra Cyber on 29th April.”
About Illegal IPL Streaming Case
According to available information, an FIR (First Information Report) was filed after Viacom18 lodged a complaint against the betting application, Fair Play. The complaint was based on allegations that Fair Play had illegally streamed IPL (Indian Premier League) matches, despite Viacom18 holding the exclusive Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) to broadcast these games. The unauthorized streaming reportedly resulted in a financial loss exceeding Rs 100 crore for Viacom18. This legal action was initiated in September 2023.
In the aftermath of the FIR, the investigation expanded to include several celebrities. Prominent figures such as the rapper Badshah, actor Sanjay Dutt, actress Jacqueline Fernandez, and Tamannaah were summoned for questioning to determine any connections they might have had with the betting platform. The investigation led to further developments, and in December 2023, an employee associated with the Fair Play betting app was arrested as part of the ongoing probe into the illegal streaming issue.
