Imtiaz Ali, known for his compelling storytelling, recently delved into the complexities of the late Punjabi singer, Amar Singh Chamkila, in his biopic starring Diljit Dosanjh and Parineeti Chopra. The film, now streaming on Netflix, takes a candid look at Chamkila's life, portraying him as a multifaceted individual with flaws and virtues.
In a recent conversation with Mid-Day, Imtiaz Ali shared his approach to portraying Chamkila, emphasizing the importance of not glorifying his life. "When depicting someone’s life, you should have the liberty — not to change the facts, but to represent all aspects of them. If you don’t show the mistakes they made, then what’s the point of glorifying them?" he remarked.
Ali highlighted Chamkila's human side, stating, "I did not set out to make him come across as this neat and clean person, which he was not. He didn’t come across as a star; but rather as a servant of the masses." He also mentioned Chamkila's humble nature and how he often agreed to everything asked of him, ultimately leading to his tragic demise. "He always agreed to everything that anyone asked him to do. And that’s how he lost his life because he couldn’t say no to the audience," Ali revealed.

Despite acknowledging Chamkila's flaws, Ali believes that these imperfections are what make him relatable to audiences. "Sometimes it is the flaws and irregularities in a character that endear them to the audience. Then they know that this guy is human, thus enabling them to relate to and root for them," he added.
Amar Singh Chamkila's biopic offers a nuanced portrayal of the singer, showcasing his journey, struggles, and the impact of his decisions. Ali's approach to portraying Chamkila as a complex, flawed, yet relatable individual adds depth to the narrative, offering audiences a more authentic and humanizing portrayal of the Punjabi icon.
