Zahan Kapoor and Rahul Bhat starrer web series Black Warrant debuted on Netflix on January 10. The show showcased the infamous Ranga and Billa case and the death penalty. The case is about the kidnapping, rape and murder case of two navy kids which took place in 1978 in New Delhi. Reports suggest that the children were kidnapped initially with the thought of taking ransom. But when they (Ranga and Billa) realised that they were children of a navy officer who might not be able to pay the ransom, they killed the kids. The series will showcase from the prison officer Sunil Gupta’s perspective (played by Zahan Kapoor).
How Were The Navy Kids Got Kidnapped?
Geeta was a second-year student at a college in Delhi, whereas her brother (Sanjay) was in 10th standard. They used to live in the Defense Officers Enclave in Dhaula Kuan. One day, Geeta and Sanjay left their home to participate in the Yuva Vani programme on All India Radio. As shown in the series, they took a lift from Ranga and Billa to reach the radio station. Soon, they realised that they had been taken to the wrong place. They started struggling to stop other vehicles on the road. They left the home at 6:15 pm and were supposed to reach by 7 pm. On the other hand, their father was supposed to pick them up from the AIR office at 9 pm. But not happen as sort of such.
Several vehicles tried to chase the car of the kidnappers and stop it but they failed. A man who was going towards North Avenue from Gurudwara Bangla Sahib noticed the Kidnapper’s car. He called the Police Control Room to inform them about the case.
When the parents switched on the radio at 8 pm to listen to their daughter’s show. They realised that it was given to someone else. When the informer called about the kidnapping case, the police did not take immediate action. Later some time, Dhani Ram found two decomposed bodies on August 28, 1978. Parents were then called by police to identify the bodies, which they confirmed. The autopsy report could not identify if there was rape as the bodies were decomposed. After there was a manhunt for the criminals, some army jawans caught them and sent them to police. Ranga and Billa confessed their crime but later stated that police tortured them to take out their confession. Later, Ranga and Billa for the murder of the Chopra children in August 1978, were given the death penalty.
