'Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani' has mesmerized the audience with its romantic dialogues and perfect comic timings blended with the family charm of Karan Johar's magic. Starring Ranveer Singh, Alia Bhatt, Jaya Bachchan, Shabana Azmi, and Dharmendra in pivotal roles, the film is running successfully at the box office minting big numbers every day.

However, one of the major highlights of the film was the character of Jaya Bachchan in the film, essaying the role of Dhanlaxmi Randhawa, an elderly matriarch in the film, thus marking her silver screen comeback after years.

Having collaborated with Karan Johar earlier, the veteran actress has always been seen as in elderly motherly figure in his Dharma films blended with love, grace, and emotions. However, this is the first time in her career that the actress nodded yes to a negative role, where her Dhanalaxmi avatar managed to create a successful impact on the audience and added an essence to the film's plot line.

Released in 2001, 'Kabhie Khushi Kabhie Gham' has managed to create a strong impact in the world of Bollywood with its perfect family charm induced with love, friendship, drama, and emotions. In the film, Jaya Bachchan essayed the role of Nandini Raichand, a perfect mother to her children Rohan and adopted Rahul Raichand, struggling to mend the relationship between her elder son and her husband.

In 2003, Nikkhil Advani's 'Kal Ho Naa Ho' saw Jennifer Kapur, mother of Preity Zinta in the film, a struggling single mother in New York trying to help her loud Punjabi family with her small restaurant, managing to meet the ends of the month and trying to spread happiness and smile on her children's face.

Essaying the role of a tense mother for her daughter away in a metro city amongst a flock of strangers, 'Laga Chunari Mein Daag' was released in 2007 and features Rani Mukherjee and Konkona Sen Sharma in leading roles.

Taking a turn from being a sweet, caring, and emotional mother in Dharma films, the veteran was seen for the first time in her career essaying a negative role. In this Karan Johar directorial she portrayed the role of Ranveer Singh's grandmother, a strong, independent, and influential matriarch of the Randhawa family.
