Kalki 2898 AD Movie Review: The story unfolds during the time of the Mahabharata when Ashwatthama, having been defeated by Arjuna, attempts the unthinkable: killing Krishna. Krishna, however, thwarts Ashwatthama’s plan by snatching the divine gem (mani) from his forehead. He then commands Ashwatthama to wait until the year 2898, when a woman will give birth to God (Krishna). The prophecy dictates that Ashwatthama must protect this woman, during which he reclaims his mani. The narrative catapults into the future, weaving mythology with the modern world in an unprecedented manner. 

Kalki 2898 AD Review

Drawing heavily from the epic narrative of the Mahabharata, Kalki 2898 AD is set against the backdrop of the ancient city of Kashi. Despite the city’s historically positive and auspicious connotations, the film paints a starkly different picture of Kashi. In this dystopian vision, the city is shrouded in darkness and despair, where the residents, ranging from children to the elderly, are subjected to abject servitude. The grim reality of Kashi contrasts sharply with its traditionally sacred and revered status.

The film’s pacing in the first half is notably slow, with lengthy introductions and extended sequences that seem to drag. These initial segments could have been more concise to maintain the engagement and make the narrative more compelling. The protracted setup might test the patience of viewers who are eager for the story to progress. However, the film redeems itself in the second half, where the action intensifies, and the plot thickens. The latter part of the movie compensates for the slow beginning, delivering a more gripping and fast-paced experience.

The only comic angle that stands out in the movie is the setting of “Bhairava and Bhuji”. However, the other inclusion of comedic elements feel out of place. The movie, with its serious tone and heavy themes, seems ill-suited for the kind of humour that is sporadically injected into the narrative. These comic moments disrupt the otherwise intense and dramatic flow of the film. 

VFX and BGM- Masterpiece

The entire movie is elevated by a meticulously crafted background score that seamlessly blends with the drama, enhancing the emotional depth and making each scene resonate more profoundly with the audience.

In addition to the stellar audio experience, the visual effects in Kalki 2898 AD are nothing short of spectacular. The VFX is executed with such precision and creativity that it not only complements the narrative but also elevates it to a whole new level. 

Kalki 2898 AD: Cast Performances

Amitabh Bachchan, in the role of Ashwatthama, dominates every scene. The legendary actor's portrayal is nothing short of mesmerising. From his very first appearance, Amitabh Bachchan’s Ashwatthama captivates BY shining brighter than the Sun in Nag Ashwin’s ambitious project. His performance transports back to the era of the Mahabharata, embodying the character with such intensity and depth that it's impossible to look away. Bachchan's commitment to protecting Deepika Padukone’s Sumati is palpable, showcasing his dedication to the role and the narrative.

Prabhas, who initially comes across as somewhat lacklustre due to the comedic elements in the first half, undergoes a dramatic transformation post-interval. As the fight to capture Sumati intensifies, Prabhas evolves into a serious, formidable force. His portrayal as a macho hero truly shines during his climactic battles with Ashwatthama. These sequences are the highlight of the film, with Prabhas stepping up his game to match Amitabh Bachchan’s powerful presence, resulting in an electrifying on-screen dynamic.

Deepika Padukone, playing the pivotal role of Sumati, strives to keep pace with her co-stars. While her character has immense potential, the execution leaves much to be desired. Sumati, unaware that she is destined to give birth to Lord Krishna, is portrayed in a way that feels somewhat underwhelming. Considering the significance of her role, there was room for a more dynamic and impactful portrayal, allowing Deepika to fully utilise her talent.

Kamal Haasan, known for his versatility, brings something unique and challenging to the table. His portrayal of Supreme is a testament to the expansive range of South Indian cinema. Despite limited screen time, Kamal Haasan leaves a lasting impression, his presence elevating the film’s overall narrative.

Unexpected Cameos (SPOILER ALERT)

The film also features a series of unexpected yet delightful cameos that add depth and intrigue to the story. Vijay Deverakonda brings a fresh energy to his scenes. Dulquer Salman takes on a brief but memorable role as Prabhas’ Captain, while Mrunal Thakur’s short yet convincing performance leaves an impact. However, Disha Patani’s minimal screen time feels like a missed opportunity. In a surprising twist, SS Rajamouli makes an unexpected cameo, adding an extra layer of excitement.
