Kamala Harris has been the subject of numerous memes, particularly gaining traction when Joe Biden exited the US Presidential race and endorsed her candidacy. One prominent meme uses a coconut tree, not in a derogatory context related to skin color, but as a symbol often associated with the Indian-American Vice President. Addressing this issue, Kangana Ranaut, renowned for her candid opinions, highlighted the pervasive misogyny directed at Kamala Harris. She pointed out a meme circulating on social media that portrays Harris alongside former San Francisco Mayor Willie Brown, unfairly labeling her as a 'high-end call girl' from the 1990s.
Kangana Ranaut voiced her dismay at witnessing sexist attacks directed at Kamala Harris. In her Instagram story, the Tejas actress stressed, "Since Biden has endorsed Harris for POTUS, SM is full of such memes… I don’t support democrats but it’s amusing even in America an elderly woman politician who has been Attorney General of California has to face sexism to this extent. Honestly, these Americans think they are modern and all but they are so regressive, worse than Indians to be honest. Shame."
Kamala Harris has had a longstanding relationship with memes. Even before becoming Vice President alongside Biden, Harris's iconic moment saying "We did it, Joe" went viral.
For the unversed, in 2023, Kamala Harris delivered a speech at a White House event aimed at advancing opportunities for Hispanic Americans. She emphasised the initiative's focus on youth while also acknowledging the broader impact on families, educators, and communities, noting that "none of us live in isolation." During her speech, she humourously shared an anecdote involving her mother. "My mother ... would give us a hard time sometimes, and she would say to us, 'I don’t know what’s wrong with you young people. You think you just fell out of a coconut tree?' " Kamala Harris recounted, drawing laughter from the audience.
