Kanguva Box Office Failure: Suriya’s ambitious project Kanguva touted as one of the most expensive Indian films with a reported budget of Rs 350 crores, has struggled to make its mark at the box office. Despite the high expectations surrounding the reincarnation drama, the film has managed to earn only Rs 67.50 crore net in India and crossed the Rs 100 crore mark globally after 12 days—a performance far below its production cost.
Producer G. Dhananjeyan recently addressed the film's underwhelming performance and pointed to external factors contributing to its downfall. Dhananjeyan shared his perspective, claiming that the failure was not merely due to the film itself but also because of targeted negativity.
Dhananjeyan revealed that two prominent fandoms within the Kollywood industry have been relentlessly trolling Suriya and his movies. He explained in a conversation with the YouTube channel Aagayam Tamil, "Back in 2014, I mentioned that two fandoms were targeting Suriya completely. These fandoms seem determined to prevent Suriya from reaching greater heights. Whenever I post something about Suriya or Kanguva, I see hateful comments and trolls, particularly from profiles representing a specific hero. Their dislike seems personal, but I don’t want to name names."

The producer also highlighted political interference as a significant issue. He stated that Suriya’s past comments on NEET and education policies in Tamil Nadu may have irked certain political groups. According to Dhananjeyan, these groups used the film as a medium to express their displeasure by spreading negativity online and influencing public perception. While Kanguva boasted a star-studded cast including Bobby Deol and Disha Patani, the film faced criticism for its weak screenplay and unengaging storyline. Many believe that these creative shortcomings played a role in its inability to resonate with audiences.
