It is reportedly based on a true story and revolves around a police officer and his team trying to catch a criminal gang in India. Writer Rony David Raj earlier revealed that Mammootty was not the original choice for 'Kannur Squad'. In an interview with Mathrubhumi, he said, "Before we narrated the story to Mammukka, we had approached someone else. That time, we felt that the entire story had a documentary vibe to it and so, we decided to change the second half. Consequently, the movie’s scale also increased. Then we had to have a better performer who had to pull this off."

Talking about the OTT release of 'Kannur Squad', SonyLiv has reportedly bought the digital rights of the film.

On the work front, Mammootty will next star in 'Kaathal - The Core' along with Jyotika in the lead role. He was last seen in 'Christopher' along with Vinay Rai, Sneha, Amala Paul, Aishwarya Lekshmi and Aditi Ravi.
