With action blockbusters like Animal, Jawan, Pathaan, and Dhurandhar ruling the box office, conversations around increasing violence and gore in cinema have intensified. Many are questioning whether high-octane action films are the only genre succeeding commercially today. In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter India, Kareena Kapoor and Kalyani Priyadarshan shared their thoughts on the growing trend of hyper-masculinity dominating films.
Kalyani said, "Right now, I am going to call this a trend because I believe it's a trend and it's not going to last. But the trend has always been about spectacle. Every scene has to be sensational and shocking. And I think it translates that you can show spectacle with violence and easily shocking things."
"People are thinking that's what's selling cinema. I don't think that's what selling cinema right now, but I think that's where it's heading right now, and we're losing the small films and small moments and a lot of emotional intimate moments and it scares me a little," she further added.
Kareena agreed and said, "Now it's all like thriller, crime, gore and blood and stuff. No fun, energy, colour, song, love or romance."
Kareena Kapoor will next be seen in Meghna Gulzar’s upcoming film Daayra, which also features Prithviraj Sukumaran in a leading role. The film explores the intricate relationship between crime, punishment and justice, focusing on the moral grey areas that emerge when a single incident alters the lives of several people.
The story examines how society views guilt and accountability, raising thought-provoking questions about the judicial system and human conscience. When the project was first announced, Kareena described her collaboration with Meghna Gulzar and Prithviraj Sukumaran as a 'dream team'. Daayra is expected to hit theatres later this year, though the makers have not yet revealed an official release date.
