Karisma Kapoor Reacts To Priya Kapur’s Supreme Court Bid To View Divorce Documents With Sunjay Kapur; Calls It ‘Frivolous’

Bollywood actor Karisma Kapoor has strongly objected to a plea filed in the Supreme Court of India by Priya Kapur, seeking access to her divorce papers with late businessman Sunjay Kapur. Karisma has termed the request “frivolous” and said it is a serious violation of her right to privacy. The legal move comes amid an ongoing and high-profile dispute over Sunjay Kapur’s vast estate.

What Is Priya Kapur Seeking From The Supreme Court?

Priya Kapur, Sunjay Kapur’s second wife, has approached the Supreme Court requesting certified copies of the divorce decree and related documents from Karisma Kapoor’s 2016 divorce with Sunjay Kapur. According to her legal team, these documents are required to present a “complete factual background” in the ongoing inheritance case linked to Sunjay Kapur’s estate. Sunjay Kapur passed away earlier this year, triggering a legal battle over his assets, reportedly valued at nearly Rs 30,000 crore. The dispute involves multiple family members, including Karisma Kapoor’s two children, who have challenged the authenticity of the will allegedly left behind by their late father.

Karisma Kapoor’s Strong Objection To The Plea

Karisma Kapoor, through her lawyers, has firmly opposed Priya Kapur’s application. Her legal team argued before the Supreme Court that the divorce documents are confidential and strictly private in nature. They stated that Priya Kapur has no legal right to access these records. Her lawyers described the plea as “frivolous”, adding that it was only meant to dig out personal information from family court proceedings. They also argued that the matter had already been settled amicably years ago and should not be reopened. The lawyers further pointed out that the consent terms and divorce decree were already submitted by Priya Kapur in a related case involving Karisma Kapoor’s children before the Delhi High Court, making the fresh application unnecessary.

What Did The Supreme Court Say?

The matter was heard in a closed chamber by a bench led by Justice AS Chandurkar. After listening to both sides, the Supreme Court directed Karisma Kapoor to file her objections in writing within two weeks. No formal notice has been issued yet. The court will decide whether Priya Kapur’s plea is maintainable and whether she has the legal right to access the divorce papers.

Background Of Karisma Kapoor And Sunjay Kapur’s Divorce

Karisma Kapoor and Sunjay Kapur divorced by mutual consent in 2016 after an amicable settlement. The Supreme Court had taken the “consent terms” on record at the time. As per the settlement, the custody of their two children was granted to Karisma Kapoor, while Sunjay Kapur was given visitation rights. After an in-chamber hearing in 2016, Karisma’s lawyer had stated that “all pending disputes between the couple had been amicably resolved” (sic).

Reports suggest that Sunjay Kapur’s sister has also objected to Priya Kapur’s plea, stating that Karisma and Sunjay’s divorce documents should not be dragged into the inheritance dispute. For now, all eyes are on the Supreme Court’s next hearing.
