The world's most famous Costume Party is all set to take place on May 1 at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. From arrangements to the guest list, we can safely assume that at this point, everything might have been finalised.

Met Gala Theme: Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty

Although the motif is appropriate to pay tribute to the late designer, it is also quite specialised and may prove difficult for certain designers to get the perfect appearance. The topic has also drawn a lot of criticism, and it will be interesting to watch how designers interpret it.

Who was Karl Lagerfeld?

Karl Otto Lagerfeld was a German fashion designer, creative director, artist and photographer. He was known as the creative director of the French fashion house Chanel, a position held from 1983 until his death, and was also the creative director of the Italian fur and leather goods fashion house Fendi, and of his own eponymous fashion label. He collaborated on a variety of fashion and art-related projects.

A look at Karl Lagerfeld outfits on Red Carpets over the years:

Jennifer Lopez

J.Lo's metallic grey Chanel gown at the 2001 Academy Awards helped establish her position as a high-fashion doll, but it also sparked some criticism. The top was a little transparent and was deemed scandalous at the time. Nonetheless, it serves as a reminder that Lagerfeld was never scared of a little sartorial outrage.

Lady Gaga

While Lady Gaga was in the midst of her most daring fashion phase in 2011, Lagerfeld designed a couture dress that was both ladylike enough to wear the Chanel mark and crazy enough for Gaga.

Kristen Stewart

Nearly eleven years have passed since Kristen Stewart first started dating Chanel. She has since been able to add her own distinctive touch to the brand's apparel, frequently giving it a punkier and more laid-back edge.
