Karmma Calling Review: Adapted from the original US series 'Revenge' created by Mike Kelly, 'Karmma Calling' is a story set in the Indian context, weaving a narrative of secrets, love, betrayal, and revenge. The series remains engaging due to its compelling dialogues, profound life lessons, and a diverse array of intriguing characters.

Plot

In the serene coastal town of Alibaug, adorned with sparkling fairy lights, the heir to the Kothari family, Ahaan (Varun Sood), is on the brink of engagement with Karmma (Namratha Sheth). Yet, the most skeptical observer of this union is Indrani Kothari (Raveena Tandon), who once dominated Bollywood in the '90s and now holds undisputed sway over her exclusive domain, Ahaan's mother and the influential matriarch of Alibaug. With a keen eye for detail, nothing eludes her watchful gaze. As she extends a greeting to her prospective daughter-in-law, she discreetly imparts a whispered message, expressing her intent to closely observe her. It becomes evident that a sense of restlessness is about to disrupt the tranquil surroundings.

First episode grabs your attention, but the intricate narrative takes some time to unfold, revealing how Karmma Talwar, originally Ambika Mehra, with a fervent quest for justice, seamlessly integrates into the life of Ahaan Kothari. The narrative pivots around how Karmma executes her plans for revenge. Tragedy strikes when calamity befalls Indrani's daughter during a beach outing with her boyfriend, leading to the discovery of her brother's lifeless body.

Despite melodramatic setup, casting and loopholes, the series is engaging due to the authentic and sincere story with Karmma on a mission to hold accountable the true culprits behind the crime, with a primary focus on the affluent Kothari family and Alibaug's society matriarch, Indrani.

Cast and Direction

The acting performances in Karmma Calling are a major drawback. None of the actors bring significant depth or elevate the overall look and feel of the show. It is the adapted storyline that compels viewers to continue watching, despite a shaky start that eventually finds its rhythm.

Indrani, who married to the wealthiest man, is well aware of his infidelity. Choosing to overlook his indiscretions, she values the power and influence that wealth affords her. However, the entry of the mysterious Karmma disrupts the status quo. Indrani views her with suspicion and perceives her as a source of trouble. In contrast, Karmma sees Indrani as her ultimate adversary, the one person she is determined to dismantle.

Well, Raveena Tandon's portrayal of Indrani Kothari is passable, yet her potential as a performer seems largely untapped over the course of the seven episodes. She is good as the scheming Indrani, bearing the weight of the past. The actress brings considerable impact, and beyond her captivating screen presence, she prevents the show from losing its momentum. Namrata Sheth, in the role of Anamika or Karmma Talwar, falls short in making a strong impression. Varun Sood as Ahaan Kothari, feels okish. The other supporting actors including Vikramjeet Virk, Viraf Patel, Rohit Roy, Amy Aela did a decent job for making it worth watching.

Final Verdict

Karmma Calling relies on compelling drama but is hindered by the performances of its actors. Season 1 of Karmma Calling concludes with potential, and the creators aim to build on it in future episodes. While it makes for a binge-worthy experience.
