Anupam Kher and Kirron Kher have the most enduring marriage in the Bollywood industry. For many years, they were good friends and finally got married in 1985. Both Anupam and Kirron have spoken publicly about their relationship. But before Kirron, Anupam Kher had another marriage that many people don’t know about.
Raju Kher, in a recent conversation, revealed what actually happened, how a filmy romance turned into a wedding, and why Anupam left her immediately.
Who Was Anupam Kher’s First Wife?
Anupam Kher’s first wife was Madhumalti Kapoor. Raju Kher told Siddharth Kanon that their marriage was not an impulsive decision. Anupam and Madhumalti had already been dating for around two to three years before the couple decided to marry.
"They had been in a relationship for two or three years. One day, she said, ‘Let’s get married.’ He said, ‘Okay, let’s do it tomorrow,’ and they got married,” Raju recalled.
According to Raju, they got married in a temple in Lucknow. There was no elaborate family wedding, either. Surprisingly, none of Anupam’s family members was present.
However, whatever had made the relationship work for those two or three years did not translate into married life. The very next day after getting married, according to Raju, Anupam told him that he could not stay with Madhumalti. The v veteran actor subsequently left Lucknow.

Why Did Anupam Kher And Madhumalti Kapoor Separate?
There is no official record of why Anupam Kher and Madhumalti Kapoor’s marriage ended so quickly.
Raju also did not explain what caused the split of the couple. He said he never tried to find out exactly what had happened between the couple, adding, “Only they know what happened between them.”
He also described his brother as “quite seedha for that time” and Madhumalti as “a somewhat strong woman”, but did not assign blame to either of them.

Who Is Madhumalti Kapoor?
Madhumalti Kapoor was an actress who was married to Anupam Kher before he married Kirron Kher. Born on January 12, 1955, in Mumbai, she worked across theatre, films and television.
Her screen credits include Gadar: Ek Prem Katha, The Hero: Love Story of a Spy, Sonu Ke Titu Ki Sweety, Ek Lakdi Ko Dekha Toh Aisa Laga, De De Pyaar De, Gadar 2, and Khel Khel Mein.
After her marriage to Anupam ended, she later married writer-director Ranjit Kapoor. Ranjit is known for his work in Indian theatre and for writing screenplays and dialogues for films including Jaane Bhi Do Yaaro, Ek Ruka Hua Faisla, Bandit Queen, Lajja and The Legend of Bhagat Singh.

Anupam Kher and Kirron knew each other from their early theatre days in Chandigarh. They were friends for a long time before getting married. In fact, Anupam has previously recalled that Kirron was married to businessman Gautam Berry when they first became close.
In a report by the Times of India, Anupam recalled how their equation gradually changed. He said they had been “best friends for 10 years” before their relationship took a romantic turn. Their friendship, he said, gave them the familiarity to get married.
The couple got married on August 26, 1985. By then, Anupam had also begun making his mark as an actor. His breakthrough came with Mahesh Bhatt’s Saaransh in 1984.
On the other hand, Kirron worked in theatre and movies. Over the years, the two became one of the most recognisable couples in the Hindi film industry.
