In a distressing turn of events, Bengali actress Payel Mukherjee was attacked by a bike-riding assailant in Kolkata. The attacker smashed the window of her car, leaving her visibly shaken on Southern Avenue. The actress broke down in tears as she shared her traumatic experience on social media, where she recounted the incident live. The video and photos from the scene show the shattered car window, underscoring the severity of the assault. The incident occurred amid ongoing protests in Kolkata following the rape and murder of a female doctor on duty at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital (RGKMCH) on August 9. The incident has further fueled calls for urgent reforms and increased protection for women in the region.
Payel shared a video on her social media accounts detailing a disturbing incident. In the video, she explains that a young man on a two-wheeler stopped in front of her SUV and demanded that she exit the vehicle. When she refused to get out, the man violently shattered the right side window of her car, resulting in injuries to her hand. She narrated, "As I refused to come out fearing for my safety, the man banged against the glass on my right side window and broke it into pieces, injuring my hand."

"I don't know where we stand now. If a woman can be accosted and heckled in such a way in a crowded street in the evening, that exemplifies the real situation. And this happens amid rallies taken out all over the city on the issue of women's safety,” Payel Mukherjee added. For the unversed, Kolkata is currently engulfed in anger and demonstrations, with citizens demanding justice and stricter safety measures. The attack on Mukherjee has intensified the outcry, drawing attention to the broader issues of women's safety and security.
She further stated, "I shudder to think what would have happened to me had this incident taken place in a deserted spot." Payel Mukherjee also shared another video showing locals gathered at the scene of the incident while she recorded details of the miscreant's bike. Following her complaint, the police have detained the individual involved. According to news agency PTI, the man asserted that Mukherjee’s car had brushed against his bike. However, she has refuted this claim.
Meanwhile, on August 9, the body of a 31-year-old trainee doctor was discovered in a partially undressed state in the seminar hall of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. The autopsy revealed that the woman had been sexually assaulted before being strangled and smothered to death. The investigation has identified Sanjoy Roy as the primary suspect.
