Kriti Sanon is riding high on the success of her latest film, Crew, a heist comedy directed by Rajesh A Krishnan. Starring alongside industry stalwarts Kareena Kapoor and Tabu, the film has been a box office hit, grossing over Rs 75 crore domestically. Despite her recent success, Kriti is confronting a persistent issue in the film industry - pay disparity between male and female actors.
In a conversation with Film Companion, Kriti expressed her frustration over the glaring pay gap, questioning why some male co-stars earn ten times more than their female counterparts. She highlighted the lack of justification for this discrepancy, particularly when some male actors haven't delivered a hit in years.
Kriti shed light on the reasoning often provided by producers to justify the pay gap, citing the importance of pre-release revenue streams like digital and satellite rights. According to her, male-centric films tend to perform better in these areas compared to female-led films, leading to higher budgets and subsequently, higher pay for male actors.
The actress also lamented the unequal budget allocations for films with female-led casts, citing her own experience with 'Crew'. Despite featuring three A-list female actors, producers were reportedly reluctant to invest the same budget as they would in a similar comedy with three male actors. This discrepancy, she noted, remains unchanged since the release of 'Veere Di Wedding' in 2018, a film that saw actresses like Kareena and Sonam Kapoor take pay cuts to manage the budget.
'Crew', which revolves around three air hostesses navigating their exploitative jobs in a sinking airline, also features actors like Diljit Dosanjh, Kapil Sharma and Rajesh Sharma. The film, co-produced by Rhea Kapoor and Ekta Kapoor's Balaji Motion Pictures, received acclaim for its unique storyline and performances.
Kriti's upcoming projects include the Netflix India thriller 'Do Patti', where she stars alongside Kajol and makes her debut as a producer under her banner Blue Butterfly Films.
