BAFTA 2025: Payal Kapadia’s directorial All We Imagine As Light has made India proud by gaining global recognition. The Malayalam movie tells the story of two Malayali women and their journey in Mumbai, starring Kani Kusruti, Divya Prabha, and Chhaya Kadam. The film earned a nomination at the 2025 BAFTA Awards under the Best Film Not in the English Language category but lost to the Spanish-language French crime-musical Emilia Pérez. After the Golden Globes and Critics' Choice Awards this year, this marks the third time the film has failed to win the award. Other films, including I’m Still Here, Kneecap, and The Seed of the Sacred Fig, were also nominated in the same category.
Payal Kapadia directed All We Imagine As Light, which has received global acclaim for its touching storyline. It marked a significant achievement for Indian cinema by being represented at the 78th British Academy Film Awards (BAFTA), one of the biggest events in the film industry.

Despite several losses, All We Imagine As Light has gained considerable recognition, making waves at international film festivals. It became the first Indian film to win the prestigious Grand Prix at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival. What made the movie the talk of every discussion was its compelling story, which explored the life of a nurse, Prabha, whose world turns dramatic after she receives an unexpected gift from her estranged husband. The movie also focuses on her roommate, Anu, who desires to spend intimate time with her boyfriend in Mumbai. Their trip to a beach town allows them to confront their desires. The film was produced by Thomas Hakim and Julien Graff.
Talking about Emilia Pérez, the film centers on the lives of three women in Mexico, each pursuing her own happiness. The film stars Karla Sofía Gascón, Selena Gomez, Zoe Saldana, Édgar Ramírez, and Adriana Paz in key roles.
The BAFTA ceremony, held on February 17 IST, streamed live on Lionsgate Play in India. The gala was hosted by actor David Tennant.
