The MET Gala 2023 was a star-studded event. Dubbed as one of fashion’s most iconic events in the world, the gala is attended by the biggest celebrities across the world.
This year, many Indian names made it to the red carpet of MET Gala 2023. While Alia Bhatt made her debut at the fashion event, MET regulars Priyanka Chopra, Natasha Poonawalla and Isha Ambani Piramal slayed with their looks at the red carpet.
Interestingly, Alia Bhatt and Isha Ambani both opted for outfits from the same fashion designer, Prabal Gurang. Over the years, Prabal Gurang has become synonymous with Indian celebrities and their global outings.
In 2018, Deepika Padukone made heads turn in a smoking red hot gown designed by Prabal Gurang. Following in her footsteps, Alia Bhatt chose Prabal Gurang’s designs to make her MET Gala debut.
Who Is Prabal Gurung?
Born in Singapore to a Nepalese couple, Prabal Gurung grew up in Kathmandu, Nepal. The ae fashion designer studied in the National Institute of Fashion Technology in New Delhi and interned at many local fashion and production houses.
After years of assisting stylists in London and Melbourne, he went to New York in 1999 and worked with Donna Karan. After almost 10 years, Prabal Gurang made his own fashion line debut at the New York Fashion Week in 2009.
Over the years, Prabal Gurang’s designs have been worn by top celebrities from around the world including Demi Moore, Anne Hathaway, Michelle Obama, Oprah Winfrey, Catherine (The Duchess of Cambridge) and Lady Gaga. In Bollywood, Priyanka Chopra, Deepika Padukone and Katrina Kaif have been spotted wearing his designs.
Alia Bhatt Opts For Prabal Gurung Designs For MET Gala 2023
To make her fashion debut at the world stage, Alia Bhatt opted for a Prabal Gurung gown. Taking to her Instagram account, the actor penned a long note thanking the designer for giving an Indian touch to her outfit.
“Met Gala — Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty I have always been fascinated by the iconic Chanel brides. Season after season, the genius of Karl Lagerfeld shone through in the most innovative and awe-inspiring couture. My look tonight was inspired from this and in particular by supermodel Claudia Schiffer’s 1992 Chanel bridal look. I wanted to do something that felt authentic (hello, pearls!) and proudly made in India,” wrote Alia Bhatt via her Instagram.

The actor added, “The embroidery, made with a 100,000 pearls is a labour of love by @prabalgurung. I’m so proud to wear you for my first Met. A girl can never have too many pearls… and the right accessories to complement the look which in our case translated to the bow of pearls on my hair. Oh, and it’s white, for my Choup-ED.”
