In Mathew Lopez's auspicious debut into feature filmmaking with Red, White & Royal Blue, audiences were treated to a cinematic feast of gay romance set amidst the world of royalty, all under the grand umbrella of a major production house. With a dash of comedy, a sprinkle of intensity and an undeniable chemistry between its impossibly good-looking leads, this movie delivered a refreshing take on love. At its core, RWRB follows the blossoming romance between British prince Henry (portrayed by Nicholas Galitzine) and the American President's son Alex (played by Taylor Zakhar Perez).
Why RWRB Is Relevant In Today’s Time?
In today’s world, where conversations around LGBTQ+ rights are still met with resistance in many places, a movie like Red, White & Royal Blue feels more than just entertainment; it feels necessary. This movie made queerness visible in the mainstream cinema without apology. It proved that a gay love story can be just as dreamy, dramatic and universal as any straight romance. By presenting queerness not as a tragedy but as a joyous feeling, it challenged the age-old notion that such relationships are taboo, instead celebrating them with pride and dignity.

My Review Of Red, White & Royal Blue:
What really grabbed my attention was the adorable ‘nok-jhok’ between the prince and the President's son, evolving into a heartwarming friendship that took an unexpected turn with a spontaneous kiss. As their journey unfolds, it is a beautifully crafted portrayal of two contrasting personalities navigating the complexities of love and societal expectations. For a cinephile like me, Nicholas and Taylor's onscreen chemistry is so natural that it ignited the most intense scenes with a raw authenticity that appeared to be both masculine and tender.
The maker's meticulous attention to detail was evident, from the rich colour palette that sets the mood to the masterful execution of pivotal moments, such as the infamous ‘Cake Gate’ controversy. While some may dismiss it as cheesy or unrealistic, Red, White & Royal Blue is a visual feast that offers a refreshing perspective on love and identity. I feel that its significance lies not only in the romance it portrays but also in the cultural shift it represents, showing that queer love stories deserve the same grandeur, joy and celebration as any heterosexual romance.

Highlight Of The Movie:
One standout moment for me is Alex's impassioned speech, where he bravely proclaims his love for Henry to the nation, a powerful testament to the movie’s message of acceptance and authenticity. This scene hits harder because it reflects real struggles many still face, choosing love openly against all odds. Moments like these remind us how impactful cinema can be in breaking stereotypes and fostering empathy.
Red, White & Royal Blue earned its stripes with a 9/10 rating for its compelling portrayal of love in the face of societal scrutiny. All in all, this couple gave us major ‘dostana’ vibes, which were also accepted by the masses with an open mind. With its blend of heart, humour and undeniable charm, this film is a must-watch for romantics and cinephiles alike.
