Mrunal Thakur has created a niche for herself since her appearance in light-hearted movies from the South Indian film industry such as 'Sita Ramam (2022)' and 'Hi Nanna (2023)'. These movies come under pan-Indian films since the advent of subtitles. Both her films were loved by audiences across India and received a lot of praise. Mrunal’s acting skills were especially appreciated in the two Telugu films.
Recently, a video featuring Mrunal Thakur discussing her experience with the media's preference for "star kids" over her during an interview has gained significant attention on social media. In the video, Mrunal expresses her belief that nepotism in Bollywood is not the fault of the star kids but rather the fault of the audience and the media. The clip shows Mrunal giving media interviews. She is shown saying, “Let’s begin with media. For example, we don’t have Ananya and Janhvi, unfortunately. But I have to say something, it’s not their fault, they are star kids, it’s we, as common people who are so intrigued to know what’s going on in their life.”

During an awards night where Mrunal won the Best Actress Critics award, she mentioned that the media left her interview midway and rushed towards Janhvi Kapoor who had won an award in a different category. According to Mrunal, she was in the middle of an interview when the media ran towards the star kid. This incident occurred even though Mrunal had won the same award as Janhvi on the same night. Mrunal also mentioned that she was not even given the chance to give a speech. This incident reportedly took place during Mrunal's appearance at the 21st Jio MAMI Mumbai Film Festival in 2019.

She also said that the media should be responsible while taking up the nepotism debate. She said, “I am not saying that I am jealous or something. I am saying that it’s not their fault. So stop pointing nepotism, nepotism. It also, what I feel, depends on the audience and the media especially".
Mrunal Thakur’s upcoming Telugu film ‘Family Star’ alongside Vijay Devarakonda will be released in theatres on April 5, 2024. The movie is directed by Parasuram. The movie will also feature the 2019 film 'Majili' actor Divyansha Kaushik.
