Munjya Real Ghost Story: Horror-comedy movie 'Munjya' has been receiving a lot of love from the audience and has also been performing well at the box office. Directed by Aditya Sarpodkar, the movie stars Abhay Verma, Sharvari, Mona Singh and Sathyaraj in the lead roles. The movie revolves around a young man, who unveils a vengeful spirit after visiting his native village. For the unversed, the movie is inspired by a legend popular in Maharashtra. As the movie is still running in theatres, know the folklore and story behind 'Munjya'.

Munjya Real Ghost Story: 

Many Hindu families follow a tradition of the upanayana ceremony, in which a sacred thread is tied around the boy's torso and a girdle and it usually happens at the age of seven. As the thread is made of 'munja' grass aka narrow-leaved green herbage, the boy becomes known as 'Munjya' after putting on the thread.

Talking about the munjya ghost, it is believed that they are the ghost of boys who died after the upanayana ceremony and before their marriage. They inhabit peepal trees, roam at night and are usually harmless. They are also known to pelt offenders with stones and sometimes cause accidents in other stories.

'Munjya' is a part of the same horror universe, which includes Stree', 'Stree 2' and 'Bhediya'. Varun Dhawan also had a cameo role in 'Munjya', in which he reprised his role from the movie 'Bhediya'. While speaking to Firstpost, Mona Singh talked about working in 'Munjya' and said, "When filmmaker Aditya Sarpotdar approached me with the script, I had no idea about Munjya. I didn’t know that in the Konkan belt, there are these kinds of folklores. Yes, I’ve lived in Mumbai and Pune but I was not exposed to this culture. So when we were on sets, we had a lot of Marathi actors and everyone was from the same region."
