Nayanthara and Dhanush controversy: Nayathara is gearing up for the release of Nayanthara- Beyond The Fairy Tale which is all set to make its OTT debut on Netflix on November 18, 2024. A bitter dispute has erupted between South superstars Nayanthara and Dhanush over a three-second clip in the Netflix documentary. Dhanush is demanding Rs 10 crore for alleged unauthorised use of footage from his production, prompting Nayanthara to respond with a scathing open letter, questioning the hefty sum for such a brief clip.
What is Nayanthara and Dhanush controversy?
Dhanush has taken decisive action by serving a substantial Rs 10-crore legal notice to the producers of the upcoming documentary, Nayanthara: Beyond The Fairy Tale, following the release of its trailer last week. The contentious issue revolves around the documentary's purported inclusion of footage from the 2015 Tamil romantic comedy, "Naanum Rowdy Dhaan", which was produced by Dhanush's production house, Wunderbar Films. This film, written and directed by Vignesh Shivan, who is also Nayanthara's husband, featured Nayanthara alongside Vijay Sethupathi in leading roles.
By issuing this legal notice, Dhanush aims to protect his intellectual property rights and address the unauthorised use of footage from his production venture.
Nayanthara recently took to Instagram to share her side of the story, revealing that the documentary team had initially sought Dhanush's approval for using footage and songs from "Naanum Rowdy Dhaan". However, after multiple requests, Dhanush reportedly declined to grant permission, prompting the team to move forward with a revised version of the documentary, sans the requested content.
Nayanthara expressed her disappointment that the Netflix documentary about her life, love and marriage, which features contributions from several industry well-wishers, does not include footage from "Naanum Rowdy Dhaan", a film she holds dear. Despite its significance, the documentary was unable to include this pivotal project due to Dhanush's refusal to grant permission.
Nayanthar stated, “We were startled to read those lines wherein you questioned the usage of some videos (just three seconds) that were shot on our personal devices, and that too BTS visuals that are already very much publicly present on social media, and claimed a sum of ₹ 10 crore as damages for the mere three seconds. This is an all-time low from you and speaks volumes about your character. I wish you were half the person you portray on stage at audio launches in front of your innocent fans, but clearly, you do not practice what you preach, at least not with me and my partner.”
Nayanthara alleged that Dhanush made disparaging remarks about the nearly decade-old film "Naanum Rowdy Dhaan", and further accused him of maintaining a duplicitous persona, hiding his true nature behind a facade of kindness while continuing to exhibit vile behaviour.
