Karisma Kapoor, the classic 90s queen of Bollywood, is celebrating her 52nd birthday on 25 June, having been born on this day in 1974. Known for her powerhouse acting and iconic dance moves, she continues to capture hearts, most recently winning rave reviews for her lead role as a raw, broken cop in the crime thriller series Brown. Interestingly, she initially refused to do the show due to the long shooting schedule in Kolkata and then finally decided to step out of her comfort zone. Brown’s near-miss success story reminds us of some major cinematic blockbusters she actually turned down over her spectacular career.

Not only brown, Karisma Kapoor is well known for rejecting blockbuster roles in her acting career. From Tina’s role in Kuchh Kuchh Hota hai to Madhu’s role in Ishq, the actress rejected these five hit roles that later became blockbusters.

1. Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, 1998 (Rani Mukerji’s role, Tina)

Directed by Karan Johar and featuring Shah Rukh Khan, Kajol, and Rani Mukherjee in lead roles. Karishma was offered the role of Tina, a vibrant college girl who gets married to Rahul (Shah Rukh) but tragically passes away during childbirth. Karisma Kapoor refused the role since she was unwilling to be a sidekick.

2. Ishq, 1997 (Juhi Chawla’s role, Madhu)

In this romantic comedy movie by Indra Kumar featuring Aamir Khan, Ajay Devgn, Juhi Chawla, and Kajol, Madhu is a rich girl struggling against her parents for her love. Karishma was asked for the role of Juhi Chawla, which she rejected. Later, the film Ishq emerged as the year's third highest grosser and also went on to win a number of awards.

3. Gupt, 1997 (Manisha Koirala’s role, Sheetal)

Directed by Rajiv Rai and starring Bobby Deol, Manisha Koirala, and Kajol, this suspense thriller features Sheetal, a supportive friend helping her framed lover track a killer. Karisma Kapoor rejected the character because she felt the script focused too heavily on Kajol’s intense negative role.

4. Judaai, 1997 (Urmila Matondkar's role, Jahnvi Sahni)

Karishma was initially offered the role of Urmila Matondkar's character, Jahnvi Sahni, in Judaai. Directed by Raj Kanwar, starring Anil Kapoor, Sridevi, and Urmila Matondkar. In the film, Jahnvi was a wealthy woman who buys a married man after his wife sold him for money. Karisma Kapoor turned it down because she felt uncomfortable playing a modern character who breaks up another woman's family.

5. Barsaat, 1995 (Twinkle Khanna’s role, Tina)

Karisma Kapoor exited the massive debut project because production delays reportedly clashed heavily with her other major filming schedules at the time. Directed by Rajkumar Santoshi, starring Bobby Deol and Twinkle Khanna, this romantic action film introduces Tina, a small-town girl caught in dangerous city conspiracies.

While these roles defined the careers of other actresses, Karisma’s legacy remains unmatched, further proven by her recent fearless performance in Brown as she continues to rule Bollywood.
