Bollywood legend Amitabh Bachchan has always been open with his fans about his health struggles. He believes in speaking honestly about illnesses to help remove the stigma attached to them. Recently, an old video resurfaced in which the actor shared shocking details about how much his health has been affected since the famous Coolie accident in 1982. That year, during the filming of a fight scene, Amitabh was gravely injured. Actor Puneet Issar was supposed to throw a fake punch, but things went wrong when Bachchan miscalculated a jump and fell onto a table. The accident left him with life-threatening injuries and he had to undergo emergency surgery. Although doctors managed to save his life, what followed was something he could not have predicted.
In the clip, from an earlier episode of Kaun Banega Crorepati, Amitabh revealed that during his surgery, he required large amounts of blood. Around 200 people came forward to donate, and he received 60 bottles in total. Unfortunately, one of the donors unknowingly carried the Hepatitis B virus. At the time, the virus went undetected and entered his system. “This entered my body in 1982. In 2005, during a routine medical check-up, it was discovered. By then, 75 per cent of my liver had been destroyed. Today, I am surviving on just 25 per cent of my liver,” he explained. The actor added that had the disease not been identified in time, the outcome could have been fatal.

Additionally, Amitabh Bachchan also recalled another serious health battle—his fight with tuberculosis. He revealed that in 2000, on the very day he was set to host Kaun Banega Crorepati for the first time, he was diagnosed with tuberculosis of the spine. Describing the experience, he said it was extremely painful and uncomfortable. “You cannot sit or lie down properly. I was taking 8–10 painkillers daily just to get through the time when I was anchoring the show,” he shared. The treatment lasted for nearly a year, but he eventually recovered.
Meanwhile, explaining why he often supports health-related causes, the Don actor said that his personal experiences inspired him to raise awareness. “I am a TB survivor. The word survivor is powerful. When you say you survived something like a plane crash, it carries weight. In the same way, when I say I am a TB survivor, it gives people strength and hope,” he said. Despite facing these life-threatening challenges, Amitabh Bachchan continues to inspire millions with his resilience, proving that even the biggest setbacks can be overcome with courage and determination.
