AMMA Election 2025: Shwetha Menon has been elected as president of the Association of Malayalam Movie Artists (AMMA), making history as the first woman to hold the position in the organisation’s 31-year run. The 2025 internal elections concluded today in Kochi, and the final results, revealed by late afternoon, have ushered in a new leadership amidst considerable scrutiny and debate. Voting for AMMA’s leadership began at 10 a.m. at a hotel in Kochi and ran until 1 p.m., with the vote count wrapping up around 4 p.m. A total of 506–507 members were eligible to cast their ballots, including 233 women. However, turnout was lower than in previous years, reflecting various tensions within the group.

On the other hand, this election comes on the heels of a turbulent period for the organisation. Last year, Mohanlal’s executive committee stepped down following widespread criticism and fallout from the Hema Committee report, which exposed deep-rooted issues in the Malayalam film industry, including sexual harassment and gender bias. Observers noted that the combination of high-profile candidates, unresolved internal grievances, and public allegations made the election one of the most fiercely watched in AMMA’s history.
