Anand L Rai’s 2013 tragic love drama Raanjhanaa has a huge and loyal fanbase, despite its heartwrenching climax. Towards the end of the movie, Dhanush’s character Kundan willingly dies (for Zoya’s sake) as he was aware of the conspiracy which was set up to shoot him during a public rally. What adds to the tragic end is the fact that Zoya was aware of the conspiracy as well, but still chose to send Kundan to the public rally, for the sake of taking revenge for her boyfriend’s death.
Raanjhanaa is now getting re-released after 12 years to recreate its magic on the big screens. But this time, the movie comes with a major twist. Reportedly, the film will feature a new ending powered by Artificial Intelligence. However, Aanand L Rai, who not only helmed but also co-produced the film under his banner Color Yellow Productions, wasn’t consulted regarding this decision of Eros International.
Anand L Rai recently showed his disappointment towards this decision during an interview with SCREEN and said, “I got to know through social media announcement a couple of days ago. People have already been messaging me asking me why that ending is being changed. I just can’t wrap my head around this.”

The director expressed his views regarding the original ending and mentioned how people loved the movie for its emotional aspect. “I don’t get it, how can they do this? It’s an ending people have loved! If not the filmmaker, at least listen to the audience. What is a happy ending? It’s a tragedy, that’s an emotion. How can you meddle with emotions? The voice of the film lies in that ending,” he said.
Anand L Rai further added that this is a learning lesson for him as well as other directors. He expressed his anger and said, “The only good thing that’s come out of this is I’ve learnt my lesson. I’ve to be very careful while signing the dotted line. I’m dealing with this, but other filmmakers should learn from this. A studio doesn’t care about the story. Just to earn a few crores, they’re tampering with a writer, director, and actor’s creation.”

Continuing the interview, the director acknowledged that he is not against technology, but the misuse of it is not acceptable to him. “They say, AI is the future. Everybody knows that. But then use it for the future or for the present. Don’t use it to distort the past! Next thing we know, they may change the climax of Sholay (1975) by keeping both Jai and Veeru alive,” he explained.
Amid the ongoing controversy of Raanjhanaa’s climax, director Anand L Rai has several upcoming projects to look forward to. His much-awaited movie Tere Ishq Mein featuring Dhanush and Kriti Sanon is a spiritual sequel to Raanjhanaa. He is also busy with projects like Tu Yaa Main and Heer.
