Barkha Singh, best known for her sweet and cheerful roles in shows like Engineering Girls, Please Find Attached, 36 Farmhouse, and Maja Ma, is now ready for a big change in her acting journey. She wants to explore serious and darker roles now. In an exclusive interview with The Daily Jagran, she spoke about her hopes to break the ‘girl next door’ image with grittier roles after the success of acclaimed web series Criminal Justice 4. She further acknowledged that the industry often ‘boxes’ actors based on the roles they’ve played. With her growing success on OTT platforms, her latest role in Criminal Justice 4 shows a new side of her as an actor.

In JioHotstar’s web series Criminal Justice 4, Barkha Singh plays Shivani Mathur, a young and focused lawyer caught in intense courtroom battles. She spoke to The Daily Jagran about how excited she was to be part of the show. “I really wanted to be a part of the show. I didn’t ask too many questions when the offer came. I just told my agency, figure out the rest, I’m saying yes.” She also said the role gave her a chance to do something very different. “It allowed me to be serious, play a lawyer, zero glam, just tied-back hair and no makeup.”

Meanwhile, Barkha Singh has often played lovable and light-hearted characters. But now she feels ready for something more challenging. “The audience has accepted me in sweet, romantic roles… but I really enjoy performing serious and dark roles a lot more,” she said. “I hope my portrayal of Shivani in Criminal Justice sets this belief in the makers that this actor is capable of doing other things as well.”

Additionally, she also spoke about how actors often get typecast in the industry. “By playing safe, I mean if an actor has been accepted by the audience in a certain kind of role, as a villain or as a rich businessman, it’s a safer bet for them to cast that actor in that universe,” she explained. “It’s not a personal attack on actors. I guess the reason behind boxing of actors happens because it’s a safer bet for a lot of creators and makers. But at the same time, obviously, I really want to break out of it. And it is a huge fight to break out of it. In fact, right now in the industry, there’s anyway lesser work as compared to what it was two years ago.”
