Members of global Kpop sensation BTS, V aka Kim Taehyung and Jungkook, have achieved a significant legal victory in their continued efforts to protect their reputations from online defamation. In a recent ruling, the Civil Appeals Division of the Seoul Western District Court held the operator of a now-defunct YouTube channel accountable for posting defamatory content targeting the two artists. The court ordered the individual to pay substantial damages, reinforcing the seriousness of spreading unverified and harmful allegations online.
The verdict marks another important milestone in the broader fight against misinformation and malicious rumours, underscoring the growing legal consequences for those who misuse digital platforms to harm public figures.
On January 23, the appellate court ruled in favour of V and Jungkook in their civil lawsuit against the operator of the YouTube channel Taldeoksooyongso. The channel was known for spreading false rumours and misleading videos about celebrities, including the BTS members and the court held that the content caused reputational harm, adjusting the damages accordingly. The appellate court ordered the channel operator to pay a total of 86 million won in damages, increasing the amount awarded in earlier rulings. This included an additional 5 million won each for V and Jungkook, with the court stating that the higher compensation better reflected the reputational harm caused by the defamatory videos.
