Coolie debuted on big screens with a lot of excitement and anticipation. Lokesh Kanagaraj, the filmmaker is a huge DC movie fan, who frequently draws inspiration from a number of Hollywood productions to appease his childhood fantasy. Nagarjuna, who is portraying the antagonist in Rajinikanth's Coolie, disclosed in an open discussion with Shruti Haasan that Lokesh drew inspiration for his outfits from Christopher Nolan's Joker in The Dark Knight.

Coolie director had Heath Ledger's Joker in mind, Nagarjuna said when discussing the 'purple & cream' colour scheme of his costumes. "Loki told the dress designers. They got two or three options. He saw and said, 'This is it. This is the one I want.' I also had a jacket. Purple jacket. It was really good. I never wore those colors," Nagarjuna shared.

Coolie movie's villain Nagarjuna further mentioned, "It is a very strange dress. I mean, even for me, it's baggy pants." To which Shruti agreed and added, "It's kind of a mix of Heath Ledger and old Joker, as we know from the character."

Nagarjuna quipped, "I'm glad he didn't put on that smile." The Telugu star, who has usually portrayed the protagonist and moralistic roles, signed Coolie after taking a few narrations. The actor disclosed that in order to determine whether to portray a negative persona, he took notes when recording the narration for the first time.
