Director Rajiv Rai's 1997 thriller Gupt stunned the audience with its shocking twist: Kajol's character was revealed to be the murderer. This bold move was groundbreaking in Hindi cinema, casting a female lead as the villain. However, not everyone was convinced by this twist, including Amitabh Bachchan.
In a recent interview, Rajiv Rai shared that Amitabh Bachchan attended a trial screening of Gupt in Chennai and called him the next day, questioning the decision to make Kajol the killer.
"He said, 'Rajiv, are you convinced with what you have done in this film? You have made Kajol the killer, are you sure? How can you be so sure?' So in one way, as a senior, he scolded me," Rai recalled. Despite Bachchan's doubts, Rai stood firm in his creative vision, and the film went on to become a huge hit, earning Kajol the Filmfare Award for Best Villain.
He further added, "Mere ko daant padi. He is a senior, he can obviously scold me. He questioned me, ‘How are you so confident that this will work?’ I told him, ‘Sir, I don’t have an answer for your questions. It is Wednesday already, please wait for 2 days, you will get your answer.’"
Rajiv Rai's 1997 film Gupt was a groundbreaking success, earning critical acclaim and commercial success. Kajol's performance as the villainous lead earned her the Filmfare Award for Best Villain, a first for any actress in that category.
