On Friday, ED conducted raid at the residence of Bollywood actor Dino Morea in connection with Mithi River Desilting case. The raid was conducted at fifteen locations, including Morea's. According to the news agency IANS, the raids are currently underway at The Royals' actor house (Villa Morea). ED officials have been conducting a raid at Morea's residence for the past 7 hours.
The raid was conducted in Mumbai and Kochi under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA), targeting locations associated with contractors and officials allegedly involved in embezzlement related to the Mithi River desilting project, according to IANS.
About the case: The case involves allegations of inflated bills, fake work logs and diversion of public funds that were meant for Mumbai's flood prevention and drainage maintenance after the 2005 floods. The Mithi River was in focus after the floods. According to reports, several audits revealed serious discrepancies in the work, pointing to potential corruption.
Stretching 17.8 kilometers, the Mithi River originates from Vihar and Powai lakes and flows into the Arabian Sea. The river gained notoriety after the devastating 2005 Mumbai floods, which claimed over 1,000 lives. The river's capacity to handle stormwater has been reduced which has increased the risks of flood.
Despite the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation's (BMC) efforts to desilt and clean the river, allegations of corruption, negligence, and ineffective work have persisted. Large sums of public funds have been allocated, but concerns remain about the efficacy of these initiatives.
