Hollywood actor George Clooney and his wife Amal have evacuated their estate in Brignoles, a village in southeastern France, as severe wildfires spread across regions of France, Spain, Italy and Greece. The couple fled the property alongside their 9-year-old twins, Alexander and Ella.
In a letter sent to Brignoles Mayor Didier Brémond, the couple confirmed their departure amidst the rising danger. Expressing their anxiety over the situation, they wrote, "At this point we have no idea whether our beautiful home makes it through this terrible moment."
The letter further read, "As we evacuate Brignoles we want to emphasise 2 things, first we hope you and the people of our city are safe and second that Amal and i are committed to making sure that whatever happens to our village, we are part of this community and we’ll be part of making it whole. We love Brignoles and our friends who live there."
According to CNN, over 224,000 people were evacuated from France's Gironde region, while another 3,000 fled Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur. Spain also evacuated at least 63,152 people.
Reuters reported that two firefighters lost their lives while battling the wildfires in Greece.
