Filmmaker Imtiaz Ali has come out in support of Oscar-winning composer AR Rahman amid the backlash surrounding the latter’s recent “communal” remark. Addressing the controversy, Imtiaz stated that Rahman’s comments have been misunderstood and firmly said that he has never witnessed any communal bias in the Indian film industry. Imtiaz’s statement comes just days after AR Rahman himself responded to the criticism and clarified his intentions following widespread reactions on social media.
Imtiaz Ali, who has collaborated closely with AR Rahman on several acclaimed films, including their recent project Amar Singh Chamkila, spoke about the issue during an interview with India Today. Sharing his perspective, Imtiaz said, “No, I don't think there is a communal bias in the film industry. I've been here for a long time, and I've never seen it, and AR Rahman is one of the brightest figures that I've met in the film industry.” He further added, “I do not actually believe that he made all the comments that are being attributed to him, or maybe it's been misconstrued. In fact, I know that he did not say exactly what is being perceived. Also, I don't remember of a single incident where there was any communal bias or animosity.”

What Did AR Rahman Actually Say?
The controversy began after AR Rahman spoke in an interview with BBC Asian Network, where he was asked whether he ever felt prejudice in Bollywood as a Tamil composer. Responding to the question, Rahman said, “Maybe I never got to know of this, maybe it was concealed by God, but I didn’t feel any of this. The past eight years, maybe, because a power shift has happened, and people who are not creative have the power now. It might be a communal thing also… but it is not in my face.” He also reportedly criticised the film Chhaava for cashing in on what he described as “divisiveness”. These comments quickly sparked online debates, with many interpreting them as a suggestion of communal bias within the industry.
Following the backlash, AR Rahman released a video statement clarifying his intent and expressing regret over any hurt caused. Reaffirming his deep connection to the country, the composer stressed that his work has always been about unity and cultural pride. In his statement, Rahman said, “Music has always been my way of connecting, celebrating and honouring our culture. India is my inspiration, my teacher and my home. I understand that intentions can sometimes be misunderstood. But my purpose has always been to uplift, honour and serve through music. I have never wished to cause pain, and I hope my sincerity is felt.” The video also featured visuals of his iconic song Maa Tujhe Salaam/Vande Mataram being played during a cricket match, underlining his long-standing contribution to Indian culture.

AR Rahman’s Work Front
Despite the controversy, AR Rahman continues to remain busy on the professional front. He is currently working on Nitesh Tiwari’s upcoming epic Ramayana, where he has collaborated with Grammy-winning composer Hans Zimmer. The film stars Ranbir Kapoor, Sai Pallavi, Sunny Deol and Yash in lead roles and is scheduled for a theatrical release during Diwali 2026.
