On paper, Priyadarshan’s Haiwaan sounds like an exciting thriller. But once the film starts, it doesn’t quite live up to that promise. Akshay Kumar and Saif Ali Khan were single-handedly carrying this movie on their backs because the Haiwaan plot didn't live up to the hype.

Haiwaan Storyline

Saif Ali Khan plays Shyam, a caring brother who will do anything to arrange money for his sister’s wedding. Shyam is blind, but his sharp hearing makes up for his lack of sight. He works as the maintenance head of a multi-storey society and is loved by everyone there.

He shares a close bond with Pradhan, a retired High Court judge who lives in the building. But one night, Pradhan is murdered, turning Shyam’s life upside down. While trying to prove his innocence, Shyam must also protect Pradhan’s secret and find his killer.

Akshay Kumar plays Parshuram, the killer who has a long-standing grudge against Pradhan and his family. What follows is a cat-and-mouse chase between a blind Shyam and a vengeful Parshuram.

Why Haiwaan Doesn't Work?

1. The first half feels too long. It could have been wrapped up in 20 minutes. A tighter first half would have made the film more balanced.

2. The screenplay is stretched. There are several scenes and subplots that don’t add much to the story. They only slow the film down.

3. The comedy works, but the thriller doesn’t. Priyadarshan’s humour is one of the better parts, but the suspense and tension are not as strong as they should be.

4. The songs don’t add much. Most of them are forgettable and feel unnecessary. They also break the flow of the film.

5. The idea is stronger than the execution. The story has a lot of potential, but the weak logic and uneven writing hold it back. The film promises more than it finally delivers.

Haiwaan Cast Performances

Akshay Kumar did a fantastic job as Parshuram. It was entertaining to watch his fanatical, insane killer seeking retribution, and it was good to see him show off his range as an actor.

From the start, Saif Ali Khan's portrayal of a visually challenged guy is unconvincing. While Shyam's enhanced sense of smell and hearing is meant to make up for his lack of sight, he navigates most of Haiwaan as if his vision were not an issue.

Boman Irani, Asrani, Rajesh Sharma, Sharib Hashmi, Rajpal Yadav, Shriya Pilgaonkar, and Saiyami Kher were all excellent in their parts.

And the Mohanlal cameo, of course! It was one of the highlights of the movie.

Is Haiwaan Worth The Hype?

The plot is predictable, the action sequences are overdone, and the climax seems to go on forever. A semi-comedy, half-baked murder mystery replaced what could've been a dark, gripping drama.
