Gadar 3 Update: Released in 2001, Gadar: Ek Prem Katha became one of the biggest blockbusters in Indian cinema history and remains a fan favourite even today. More than two decades later, Gadar 2 recreated the magic at the box office in 2023, proving the franchise's enduring popularity. With both films achieving massive success, fans are now eagerly waiting for Gadar 3. Director Anil Sharma has finally shared an important update about the much-anticipated third installment.
Anil Sharma Knew Gadar Would Be A Massive Hit
Looking back at the making of Gadar: Ek Prem Katha, Anil Sharma revealed that he was confident about the film's success from the moment he heard the story from writer Shaktimaan Talwar.
During an interview with with Hindustan Times, film director Anil Sharma said, “The day Shaktimaan Talwar narrated the Gadar story to me, I knew it could become India’s biggest hit film, and that is exactly what happened.”
The filmmaker said he drew inspiration from iconic classics such as Mother India, Mughal-e-Azam and Sholay, hoping to create a film that would leave a lasting legacy.
The Unmatched Success Of Gadar
Anil Sharma believes the original Gadar achieved a rare milestone in terms of audience reach. According to him, nearly 100 million people watched the film, making it one of the most-viewed movies in Indian cinema.
He also pointed out that while Gadar 2 emerged as a major blockbuster and broke several box-office records, the original film still attracted a larger number of viewers.
Gadar Director Shares Important Update On Gadar 3
When asked about Gadar 3, the director confirmed that discussions are ongoing and the script is currently being developed.
Anil Sharma said, “If Gadar was a bomb and Gadar 2 was an atom bomb, then I need a nuclear bomb-level story for Gadar 3.”
Sharma further revealed that if the script comes together as expected, the film could go on floors next year. The update has already generated excitement among fans eager to see Tara Singh return to the big screen once again.
Anil Sharma Reacts To Gadar And Lagaan Box Office Clash
Gadar: Ek Prem Katha was released on the same day as Lagaan in June 2001. Speaking about the much-discussed clash, Sharma said it was viewed very differently at the time.
“Today people talk about the clash with Lagaan, but back then it was normal for multiple big films to release together. Audiences watched one film and then went to watch another.”
He added that filmmaking and movie-going during that era were driven more by passion and audience connection than marketing campaigns.
