Music composer Ismail Darbar, best known for his work in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s classic films such as Devdas and Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam, recently opened up about his views on his daughter-in-law Gauahar Khan continuing to work after marriage. The veteran composer admitted that he does not support Gauahar’s decision to work after becoming a wife and mother, but he also said he has no right to tell her what to do. In an interview Ismail spoke candidly about his traditional outlook and revealed that he comes from a conservative background. He explained that while he personally disapproves of certain things, he chooses not to interfere in his son Zaid Darbar’s marriage.
In a recent interview with journalist Vickey Lalwani, Ismail Darbar said, “Look, I come from a backward family. We used to turn our faces away whenever a sensuous scene appeared in a film, and that happens even today,” he said. “Gauahar is now part of our family, and we are responsible for her reputation. But I can’t tell her not to work that right belongs only to Zaid. So, I simply avoid watching her work to prevent any unnecessary confrontation.” Ismail added that he doesn’t indulge in activities that might upset him and openly admitted that his views are old-fashioned. “I know that I won’t be able to tolerate what I see on screen sometimes, and if I can’t tolerate it, I will end up confronting them. So, it’s better that I stay away,” he said honestly.

Meanwhile, the composer also compared Gauahar’s situation to that of his second wife, Ayesh, who, according to him, gave up her career to focus on raising their children. “The greatest thing my wife Ayesh did was stop working for her child’s sake,” he said. “She was earning around ₹5 lakh a month through shows and was even getting acting offers. But she never insisted on continuing. Even when I was in need of money, she never offered to earn for us.” Despite his conservative views, Ismail clarified that he respects Gauahar and appreciates her relationship with Zaid. “All I know is that she has a wonderful bond with Zaid and that she’s a great mother,” he said. “There is no harm in being honest about what I feel.”

On the other hand, Gauahar Khan and Zaid Darbar got married in 2020 when Zaid was 20 years old. The couple welcomed their first child, a son named Zehaan, in 2023, and earlier this year, they became parents again to their second son, Farwaan.
