Kamal Haasan has found himself at the centre of controversy after his recent comments about the Kannada language. This led to the Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce (KFCC) banning the release of his upcoming movie Thug Life in the state. During the audio launch of the Tamil movie Thug Life, Haasan stated that “Kannada is born out of Tamil,” a remark that sparked widespread backlash across Karnataka. Meanwhile, pro-Kannada groups, including the Karnataka Rakshana Vedike, staged protests, tore down promotional materials, and filed formal complaints against Kamal Haasan.

The KFCC, responding to mounting pressure, announced that the Thug Life would not be allowed to release in Karnataka. Sa Ra Govindu, a representative of the chamber, according to a report in ANI said, “When there is pressure, I have to do. Even Karnataka Rakshana Vedike were present; whatever they say, we should do it. Even they would speak about it. Definitely, there is no 'Sorry' term being specified anywhere by Kamal Haasan. We will surely not release the film. We (KFCC) will stand with Rakshana Vedike and other Kannada organisations."

Despite being given a 24-hour ultimatum to issue an apology, Haasan refused to back down. In response, Kamal Hassan on Friday reportedly said, “I’ve been threatened before. If I’m wrong, I’ll apologise. If I’m not, I won’t. This is my lifestyle—please don’t tamper with it.” He also clarified speaking to reporters in Thiruvananthapuram, that his comment was made “out of love,” adding, “I didn’t mean any offence. Historians taught me about language history, and politicians, including me, are not qualified to speak on such matters.”
