The Karnataka Government has recently introduced a significant change in the cinema industry by fixing movie ticket prices at Rs 200 across all theaters in the state, including multiplexes. This decision applies to all screenings of films in every language and aims to make cinema more affordable for the general public. The newly amended Karnataka Cinemas (Regulation) Amendment Rules, 2025, outline this price cap, marking a substantial step towards regulating ticket prices.
However, there's an exemption to this rule. Exempt Theatres:
- Multi-screen cinemas with premium facilities: These cinemas must have 75 seats or fewer to be exempt from the Rs 200 ticket price cap.
- Characteristics of exempt theatres: These smaller luxury or boutique screens often offer enhanced amenities such as plush seating, private lounges or advanced audio-visual systems.
The exemption allows these premium cinemas to charge higher ticket prices, catering to patrons seeking a more exclusive movie experience. This move aims to strike a balance between affordability and maintaining high-quality cinematic experiences.
The decision to cap ticket prices has been welcomed by many, but some have raised questions about its implementation.

The Karnataka film industry has long been vocal about the need to regulate movie ticket prices, especially for Kannada films that often struggle to compete with the high-priced screenings of films in other languages. In response, the latest government notification capping ticket prices at Rs 200 is being seen as a positive step. The move not only offers much-needed relief to cinemagoers but also helps create a more level playing field for Kannada cinema.
