Malaika Arora Slams Society's Double Standards On Divorce; Opens Up On Marrying Arbaaz Khan Against Mother’s Wishes

Malaika Arora began her career as a VJ (video jockey) with MTV in her early 20s. She quickly made a name for herself by conducting interviews with celebrities and hosting stints. Not long after that, she entered the world of glamour and modelling. Malaika appeared in many advertisements and song albums. Her iconic song ChaiyyaChaiyya made her a sensation overnight in 1998. The very same year, the actress hit the headlines for getting married to Salman Khan's brother Arbaaz Khan. Malaika and Arbaaz welcomed their son Arhaan Khan in 2002 and were married for decades. However, in 2016, they decided to part ways; the reason for their divorce was kept private to avoid any public drama.

Malaika Arora recently talked about the duality of society and how her personal life choices, especially her love life, brought many unnecessary judgments. While speaking to BarkhaDutt, Malaika said, "Today, if a man decides to move on and get a divorce, marry someone half his age—it’s like, ‘Wow, what a man!’ But when a woman does it, she is questioned: ‘Why would she do something like that? Doesn’t she have sense?’ There are constant stereotypes."

Malaika also opened up about her mother's blunt reaction when she said she wanted to marry the first guy she ever dated. She said, "My mom would always say, ‘Go out there, enjoy your life, and please don’t marry the first guy you date’—which I did. I married the first guy I ever dated. She couldn’t understand why I would do that. She said, ‘If you do that, how will you ever know what’s out there?’ And I was like, ‘Mom, chill now.’ But she has always been someone who encouraged us to live and dream. She never stopped us from doing anything."
