Actor, singer and television host Meiyang Chang has finally made his Bengali OTT debut with ZEE5's upcoming original series Taarkata, which premiered on June 12. The action thriller, directed by Samik Roy Choudhury, marks an exciting new chapter in Meiyang Chang's career. But in an exclusive interview with The Daily Jagran, the actor revealed that the project carries a much deeper personal connection.

Speaking exclusively to The Daily Jagran, Meiyang Chang revealed that his connection with Bengal made the decision feel natural. “I don't know if it is the right time or the wrong time. I think the opportunity decided for itself that it will come to me now,” he said.

The actor explained that he had previously worked in a Telugu web series, which gave him the confidence to explore content in regional languages. However, Bengali felt much closer to home. “Bangla is something that I think is closer to my heart. I am from Dhanbad, which is only a couple of hours away from Kolkata. Throughout my life, there has been an influence of Kolkata, be it in family life or through the Indian-Chinese community there. The food habits that we have back home and here are similar. People are similar,” he shared.

In Taarkata, Meiyang Chang plays Dodo, a full-fledged villain, marking another first in his career. The actor admitted that portraying a negative character in Bengali was one of the biggest challenges he has faced. “It gives me the chance to do something different. I'm playing an out-and-out villain. I'm doing it in Bangla and I'm doing it in Kolkata. The combination of these factors really helped me make this decision,” he said.

Despite understanding Bengali, Meiyang Chang worked hard to perfect the language for the role. “I put the challenge to myself that I want to get it as correct as possible. The character has lived in Bengal for many years, so I wanted to bring authenticity to the performance,” he explained.

The Badmaash Company actor also revealed that he felt a strong sense of responsibility while taking on the role. “Everybody had a lot of faith in me. It was my responsibility to vindicate that faith. The biggest responsibility I had was to make this villain believable because people know me as a good person. I had to convince them that I'm a bad guy,” he joked.
