Kalki 2: The highly anticipated sequel to Kalki 2898 AD has hit a major roadblock after the makers confirmed that Deepika Padukone will not be part of the second instalment. The announcement came as a shock to fans, especially since Deepika played a key role as Sumati in the blockbuster’s first part. On Thursday, production house Vyjayanthi Movies issued an official statement on X, and wrote, “This is to officially announce that @deepikapadukone will not be a part of the upcoming sequel of #Kalki2898AD. After careful consideration, we have decided to part ways.” The news immediately stirred discussions online, with many questioning why Deepika, who was central to the film’s storyline, would not continue in the sequel.

Adding fuel to the speculation, director Nag Ashwin shared a cryptic note on Instagram shortly after the announcement. Posting a fan edit of Krishna’s entry from Kalki 2898 AD, he wrote, “You can’t change what happened, but you can choose what happens next.” Fans quickly picked up on the timing of the message, debating whether it was a subtle response to Deepika’s exit. Reports have since surfaced suggesting that the decision was not about creative differences but financial disagreements. According to Bollywood Hungama, Deepika allegedly demanded a 25% hike in her acting fee compared to what she earned in the first part. In addition, she reportedly insisted on working only seven hours a day. With the film being heavily VFX-driven, insiders claimed such restrictions would significantly impact production costs and timelines.

Meanwhile, producers are said to have tried negotiating by offering luxury amenities on set to encourage longer shooting schedules. However, Deepika’s team reportedly remained firm on their demands. The report further revealed that even lead actor Prabhas did not ask for a fee increment, making the negotiations with Deepika particularly difficult. Another sticking point was the size and demands of Deepika’s entourage. Reports claimed she travels with nearly 25 staff members, for whom she requested five-star accommodation and food reimbursement throughout the shoot. Producers allegedly pushed back, stating that such costs should not be their responsibility on top of the actress’s acting fee.

Furthermore reports explained, “This has been a recurring issue. Producers in Bollywood also face similar problems when stars travel with huge teams and expect the studio to bear all additional expenses.” For now, Vyjayanthi Movies has decided to move forward with Kalki 2 without one of its biggest stars. While the rest of the cast, including Prabhas and Amitabh Bachchan, remain attached, the big question now is who will step into Deepika’s shoes in the sequel. Fans are eagerly waiting for the official confirmation of her replacement, while Nag Ashwin’s cryptic post continues to spark debates across social media.
