Operation Safed Sagar trailer offered a moving glimpse into one of the Indian Air Force's most important missions during the 1999 Kargil War. It honours the bravery, tenacity, and sacrifices of the armed personnel by incorporating intense airborne action with poignant narration.
Did you know the Netflix series Operation Safed Sagar is based on a real-life operation of the same name?
Operation Safed Sagar was the Indian Air Force’s (IAF) codename for its role in the Kargil War 1999. It was conducted alongside the Indian Army’s Operation Vijay from May to July 1999.
Operation Safed Sagar Real Story
Operation Safed Sagar began after Indian patrols discovered that Pakistani soldiers and armed intruders had occupied several high-altitude posts across the Line of Control (LoC) in the Kargil, Drass and Batalik sectors. These positions overlooked the Srinagar-Leh highway, a vital route connecting Ladakh with the rest of India.
The IAF launched Operation Safed Sagar on May 26, 1999. Pilots flew at heights of 16,000 to 18,000 feet, making it one of the world's highest-altitude air campaigns.
The Air Force carried out surveillance missions to identify enemy positions. It also targeted supply routes, bunkers and artillery posts to weaken the intruders. Helicopters transported troops, ammunition and supplies to the frontlines. They also evacuated injured soldiers, often while facing enemy fire.
The initial air strikes faced difficulties because bombing accurately at such high altitudes was challenging. The operation gained momentum after the IAF deployed Mirage-2000 fighter jets equipped with laser-guided bombs.
The Mirage-2000s carried out precise strikes on enemy positions at key locations, including Tololing and Tiger Hill. These attacks disrupted enemy supply lines and helped the Indian Army recapture strategic peaks.
The operation, however, came at a high cost.
A MiG-27 was lost after an engine failure, while a MiG-21 was shot down. Squadron Leader Ajay Ahuja ejected from his aircraft but was captured and later killed.
On May 28, 1999, a Mi-17 helicopter was shot down by a Stinger missile. All four crew members lost their lives. Despite these losses, the Indian Air Force flew more than 5,000 sorties during the conflict.
Operation Safed Sagar ended in July 1999 after Indian forces successfully drove out the intruders and regained control of the occupied positions.

Why Filming Operation Safed Sagar Was Tough?
The makers worked with Air Force veterans and filmed at real military bases using actual aircraft. To match the real 18,000-foot mission, they even shot scenes high up in the mountains at nearly 16,500 feet.
Speaking at the trailer launch, Jimmy Shergill stated that while he has previously recorded in comparable circumstances, this time was slightly different. He disclosed that after spending so much time at the altitude, a few crew members also became ill.
"They are going to kill a lot of people after this because they will think: ‘These people shot for 1.5 months, we only have to do it for 20 days.’ They won’t survive 3 days. If someone sends me again, I will run back," he said.
